Sucker for Jazz

I admit it.  There are worse vices.  But that is mine.  And not just any jazz.  I need live jazz.  If you gave me jazz on my iphone I might listen to it every now and then, but live jazz gets my juices flowing.

I’ve been looking for a good place to listen to live jazz since I moved to Tampa.  But live Jazz in Tampa is about as hard to find as a flake of snow.  But perseverance does pay off.

Swamp Head Brewery in Gainesville facebooked one day that one of their brews was going to be at The Independent Bar & Cafe in the Seminole Heights district of Tampa (their original location is in St. Pete), which is right down the road from where I work.  The IBC said that they offer jazz on the first Saturday of the month.

And I have to say, it was wonderful.  The jazz might not have been the best but atmosphere was great.  Microbrews.  Jazz.  Setting.  Wow!

And to boot The Independent Bar & Cafe has bluegrass on the third Sunday of the month.  I can’t wait!  Here’s another article about the Independent Tampa.

PS–If anyone from Tampa Independent Bar & Cafe reads this little blog, I would love to interview you to find out more about you.  Just look me up.

I won’t even go into how many jazz musicians are friends of mine, but when I lived in California I used to manage a restaurant that served food downstairs and had a jazz room upstairs. We could seat about 50 folks who got to listen to world-class jazz in an intimate setting. Most were friends of the owner who would let us know when they were “off” tour and wanted to come hang and play with us. AMAZING! Others just knew our reputation and wanted to be part of our family. Sadly, the owner took ill and the place was sold. The new owners didn’t keep the jazz room, they added more sitting, boy did they loose customers!

There’s something about live jazz that gets me going. I rarely listen to jazz on my iphone unless it Harry Conick Jr. I would really enjoy living in a place where jazz is a staple like New Orleans, San Fran, Chicago, or NYC. But once I’m done listening to jazz I want to come back home to Florida:)
